The European Sociological Association (ESA) RN13 (Sociology of families and intimate lives) Interim Meeting, hosted by TEDU Department of Sociology, took place on September 10-12, 2025.
Held under the theme "Plurality of Families: Forms, Relationships, Experiences," the meeting featured discussions on current developments in the sociology of family and intimate relationships. A total of 49 academics and researchers from Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Italy, Denmark, Australia, the Czech Republic, and Turkey presented their work. The keynote speeches were delivered by Anna-Maija Castren from University of Eastern Finland and Nükhet Sirman from Boğaziçi University.
Key topics addressed during the meeting included parenthood, motherhood, fatherhood, fertility, gender relations within the family, transnational families, migrant and refugee families, and care work. The presentations offered a broad perspective by evaluating the different forms, bonds, and experiences of families in light of individual, interactional, and structural factors. A key focus was understanding how social policies, multiple crises, and demographic transitions either limit or enable this diversity, paving the way for a more comprehensive sociological understanding of families.
In addition to the scientific program, the meeting was marked by vibrant social interactions and networking opportunities. The event was deemed a great success, making significant contributions to the field and setting a robust agenda for future research.
