Our Faculty Member Dr. Gülçin Con Wright made a presentation titled 'Parental Support to Adult Children in Later Life' at TEDU on 15.11.2019. You can find the summary of her presentation below.
'Family has always been a central social institution within sociological study as family ties are an integral and influential part of every individual’s experiences over the life course. Studies on parent-child relationships, the most enduring type of family ties, have predominantly concentrated on their early life patterns. However, relatively less is known about these enduring ties in later life and their consequences for intergenerational support between older and younger generations. This seminar will present the use of a within-family analysis on the support mechanisms between older parents and their adult children in order to understand how these mechanisms are shaped by gender dynamics. In particular, the focus will be on how parental support to adult children in later life is initiated and negotiated among older married couples. Additionally, the extent to which these processes reflect the gendered patterns and practices exhibited by parents earlier in the life course will be discussed.'
