Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic caused significant changes in various layers of society. In addition to the impact of the coronavirus on health, the pandemic made its greatest impact on economy. With the closures, pandemic measures, and the burden undertaken by the health sector, national economies around the world have taken a great hit. This article aims to understand the economic effects of the pandemic on households. The data come from a study carried out in Istanbul in 2020, funded by TUBITAK. This study evaluated the ways in which households with different levels of social vulnerability experienced the pandemic by focusing on social, economic, demographic factors as well as access to health and institutional services. In this article, we only focused on the economic experiences of households through an evaluation of the experiences of work, job loss, and the need for economic support. Quantitative analyses were conducted on the data collected from telephone surveys carried out in the first 6 months of the pandemic with a total of 441 people over the age of 18 living in the "vulnerable", "middle-upper vulnerable", "middle-lower vulnerable" and "non-vulnerable" districts of Istanbul. Findings showed that the economic experiences of the pandemic are shaped by pre-pandemic conditions and differ based on the level of vulnerability of the household.
